We hear that your wondering if you might be addicted to sugar.

The answer to your sugar dilemma hangs in the balance of your responses to a very specific set of criteria found in the handy Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edition), brought to you by the American Psychiatric Association (say that 5 times fast!)  While this criteria has historically been used to determine the severity of one’s dependence on illicit substances, we have found that it can be nicely adapted to determine food and sugar addiction as well.  So without further ado, scan over Beacon’s adaptation of the criteria and tally those you meet:

  1. Substance is taken in larger amounts and for longer periods of time than intended 
  2. Unsuccessful attempts at cutting back on use
  3. Increased time/activity/energy spent to obtain, use, and recover
  4. Cravings/Strong desire to use substance
  5. Social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced.  Continued use despite problems with fulfilling these obligations.
  6. Use continues despite knowledge of adverse consequences in interpersonal relationships
  7. Important and meaningful social and recreational activities may be given up or reduced because of use
  8. Continued use despite knowing it is causing or worsening physical or psychological problems
  9. Tolerance (marked increase in amount; marked decrease in effect) 
  10. Characteristic withdrawal symptoms; substance taken to relieve withdrawal
  11. Persistent desire and/or repeated unsuccessful attempts to quit

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the presence of at least 2 of these symptoms indicates a Substance Use Disorder.

The severity of the Substance Use Disorder is defined as:

MILD: presence of 2-3 symptoms

MODERATE: presence of 4-5 symptoms

SEVERE: presence of 6 or more symptoms
