Food Addiction 101: Causes of Obesity
Although the exact causes of obesity may somewhat vary from person to person, we know that sugar is a solid contributor. Why? Let’s take it back to the basics for a little lesson on how sugar affects the brain and body.
There are four basic steps to the biological (and behavioral) process of how sugar is a factor in the causes of obesity:
- Step 1: You eat sugar: you eat it, you like it, you crave it, and it has properties that make it addictive, such as acting on the reward pathways of the brain.
- Step 2: Blood sugar levels spike: Dopamine, a “feel good” chemical in the brain, is released and mass insulin is secreted to drop blood sugar levels to a normal level.
- Step 3: Rapid drop in blood sugar levels: High insulin levels cause immediate fat storage and the body craves the lost sugar high or “feel good” sensation from the sugar intake.
- Step 4: Hunger and cravings: The low blood sugar levels lead to an increased appetite and strong cravings; thus, the cycle is repeated, starting at step 1 again.
The sugar addiction cycle is a violent whirlwind and ultimately becomes one of the causes of obesity. The good news is that nobody is doomed in the cycle permanently — it can be broken by eliminating sugar and flour from our eating!
