H2O: It Should Steal the Show
“Drink a lot of water.” We’ve all heard this command thousands of times, and it might even seem insignificant….. It’s not.
We all know that drinking enough water is an important factor in staying healthy, but how much is enough and how much does it really help?
Doctors recommend drinking 2 liters of water a day, which is equivalent to about half a gallon. You probably know some of the physical benefits of drinking water, but did you know that staying hydrated can also affect brain function and mental health? An article on Healthline features a study on hydration in young women. The study showed that a fluid loss of just 1.36% after exercise resulted in lessened concentration, worse mood, and more frequent headaches. Another study on young men’s hydration showed that a fluid loss of 1.59% affected memory and also increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue, both major detriments to your mental health. Simply staying hydrated keeps your brain on the right track. Next time you skip water for a sugary drink, think about how you want to feel, not just physically, but also mentally.
Water can help you lose weight.
Yes, you read that right. Water can help you lose weight. Water helps you feel full and also helps boost your metabolism. Two studies, mentioned in the same Healthline article, showed that drinking half a liter (17 ounces) of water was shown to increase metabolism by 24-30% for up to 1.5 hours. Another study showed that dieters who drank half a liter of water before meals lost 44% more weight, over a period of 12 weeks. Drinking enough water could be the diet that you never knew existed. Hydration could be the key factor in you losing weight.
Make staying hydrated a priority in your day.
Now that you know even more benefits of drinking water, it’s up to you to actually start doing it. Drink water every chance you get; drink water with every meal. If you want to see the benefits that come with hydration (weight loss, improved mental health, and so on), make changes to see them. Stay hydrated, healthy, and happy!!
