Over the years, carbohydrates have received a lot of flack. Endless diets proclaim that the solution to weight-loss is a life free from carbs. The truth is, carbs aren’t the enemy here. In fact, they are an integral part of a sustainable, nutritious meal plan. We simply need to make the right choice when it comes to choosing carbs because they are not all created equal!

When it comes to carbs, the first thing to know is the difference between slow and fast carbs. Chances are you’ve been told, or have read somewhere, that foods such as bagels, muffins and bread have no place in a healthy meal plan. And truthfully, that is accurate. Highly processed foods that come from sugar and white flour are classified as fast carbs. This classification of carbs do exactly what the name suggests – they are absorbed, digested and metabolized quickly. The result? A fluctuation in our blood sugar levels and the risk of all sorts of undesirable outcomes: weight gain, type 11 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity, to name a few. Outcomes that I’m certain go against your long-term goals.

So how do you incorporate carbs as part of a sustainable solution? Aim to include slow carbohydrates – whole grains, lentils, beans, quinoa and squashes, for example. This category of carbs are digested and metabolized slowly and result in a lower and slower rise in blood sugar levels. Further, they are nutritionally dense and provide us with more energy for longer periods of time. In other words, they keep us going and curb those cravings and feelings of hunger.

The answer buddies, is not to eliminate all carbs from the table. The answer is to make a wise-minded decision when it comes to choosing the types of carbs that will benefit you and align with your long-term goals. At Beacon, we’re all about sustainable solutions, not quick fixes. Choose wisely!
