When most people hear the word “snack”, they immediately think of something that’s unhealthy. Is snacking healthy?

Snacking is what you make it. Beacon, as well as many other sources, say that snacking can be healthy, but it’s all about how you do it. In the summer, you find yourself with more free time, which can, in turn, be more chances to snack.

People snack when they’re hungry or when they’re craving something. Snacking is fine when you’re hungry, but cravings are what you really need to watch out for. An article by Eating Well mentions a game called FoodT.  FoodT is an app that that trains your brain to stay away from certain foods by pairing the food with the color red, which tells your brain no or to stop. They claim that playing the game reduces cravings for foods like chocolate, making them easier to resist and reducing how much is eaten.  Games like FoodT and video games in general provide for a good distraction from cravings. Distractions like this stop things from happening and in the case of cravings, that’s a good thing. Always make sure that you’re snacking when you’re hungry, not just craving a certain food. Cravings can lead to things like binge eating and even food addiction.

When you’re hungry and looking for a snack, look for something that will keep you full until your next meal. Avoid sugary treats like cookies and ice cream and go for something more satisfying, such as yogurt or almonds. Snacks like these are super easy and will satisfy your hunger until you eat again. Click here to see a list of other sugar-free snacks. Staying sugar-free is very important when eating at any time. Eating foods that are sugar-free can help with cravings, thus also preventing binge eating and food addiction. If you’re going to eat a snack, make sure it’s the right kind of snack.

The Eating Well article mentions another step for snacking right: decide for yourself what is and what isn’t healthy. Nowadays, there are so many labels out there that it might seem as if almost every snack is healthy. Just because a brand chooses to put the word ‘healthy” on their boxes, that doesn’t mean the food is actually healthy. It’s up to you to actually look at the ingredients and decide if it’s healthy for you. Food addiction is yours, and it’s up to you to make the choices that will help rid it.

It’s nice to have free time in the summer, but it’s also the perfect time for binge eating and cravings to take control of you. Summer is all about having fun, so don’t let bad eating habits take the fun away. Snacking is perfectly fine; it’s about what you eat and how you eat it that affects you.
